Materialinformation

Acrylic plastic (PMMA)

ALSO KNOWN AS PLEXIGLAS, PERSPEX & CRYLUX

Acrylic plastic is a material with many areas of use and is often recognized under names such as Plexiglas, Perspex, Crylux and more. The chemical designation for acrylic plastic is PMMA, polymethyl methacrylate.

The material is manufactured in two different ways. Acrylic GS is cast between two glass sheets, while Acrylic XT is extruded. Acrylic sheets can be bonded, bent, milled, laser cut and heat bent. Acrylic is naturally completely colorless, but can be tinted in an endless range of colors.

Acrylic plastic is a hard material compared with other transparent plastic materials. This gives it a more scratch-resistant surface, but also makes it more brittle and less impact-resistant.

Polycarbonate (PC)

ALSO KNOWN AS EXOLON & LEXAN

Polycarbonate is an optically clear, heat-resistant and extremely impact-resistant material, often recognized under well-known brand names such as Makrolon and Lexan. Its properties mean that the material is often used in safety glazing, machine guards, visors and other safety solutions.

For outdoor applications, there is a product variant with a special surface treatment for increased UV protection. For improved scratch resistance, there is also a variant with a harder surface layer.
